there are some conflicts on Macs between different drivers for hardware or software, often to the point of having to enable and disable certain ones in order to get a program or piece of hardware to work right. Programs, on the other hand, crash on both systems. it is not true that programs don't crash on a Mac.

because 10 times fewer people own Macs than PCs, when you do have problems it is harder to find somebody in your circle of friends that knowns how to help you solve the problem, unless you mostly know people that own Macs. Apple has more than once decided that they will no longer support old hardware and that a given Mac will not be able to run newer operating systems and programs. Others are PC or Mac only and not available for both systems. Others require you to buy a different version of the program specifically for the Mac. Lots of software is available in both Mac and PC versions. This doesn't happen often, but it does happen. sometimes those updates will change the way a certain program works in such a way that the only way to get it back to the old way of working is to completely re-install the whole operating system and all programs. Just like the PC, every couple of weeks your Mac will want to download many megabytes of updates to it's OS and programs. there are plenty of viruses that attack Macs. if you get an Intel Mac and put Windows on it, or get a regular Mac and run Windows using VirtualPC, so that you can run software that is not available on the Mac, then you now have a computer that is vulnerable to all the Windows security issues plus have to upgrade 2 operating systems as time goes on. You don't have to upgrade ($129 each) but often new programs will require the newest version of the OS, which in turn means you do have to upgrade. Apple comes out with a new version of their operating system every 12-18 months. The PC copy you have will not work on a Mac. Microsoft Office is available for the Mac. I also have an email into Photograv about running it on an iMac. I'm calling iMac now to ask about non-native software performance. Otherwise, you are getting Vista crammed down your throat. They only sell their business desktops with the option for XP. I've been on Dell's website and Apple's all morning. You'd think he was paid by Apple the way he gloats over his mac. He just jumped off the PC ship to the iMac. I have a neighbor who is a senior exec with Computer Associates.

older including Quickbooks 2006 in full fashion. It requires a minimum of 1 GB of memory and does NOT run many older programs. Vista may not be the end all/be all that Mickey Soft wants it to be. I am looking forward to hearing more about using Macs. Like you I am doing more graphical stuff and no longer do any programming. But I don't like the way MS is going and I am not at all happy with Vista. I spent a good portion of my consulting career moving small start-ups from Mac to PC and really disliked Macs. Glad to see that I am not the only one thinking of jumping to Mac. We send files back and forth all of the time. I know that she runs also runs CorelDRAW on her machine. I haven't received a report on the success of that trial. My sister was going to download the 30-day free trial to see how it runs.
We contacted SAGE a few days ago and discovered that their program will run on the new Macs with the Intel chip. You will be much more successful with this type of machine running PC programs. My sister has a new Mac with the Intel processor. I believe that Corel stopped writing for Mac's so unless you run a virtual PC on the Mac, the latest version of Corel for Mac's is #11. Looking forward to hearing any tales of woe or pro! So - anyone have any insight? Has anyone else recently switched from a PC to a mac and is still able to run our industries needed software packages of Corel, Photograv, etc? It's very tempting and they make it look a snap - particularly if you watch those catchy ads on TV! In particular Office (which I know will run), Corel and Photograv - which I don't know if they will be supported. If I switch to a mac, there is the obvious question on whether my PC based apps will run on it.

I can't get them to install only XP - what I run now. Speaking with Dell, they are totally in bed with Microsoft and Vista is a required load. Not to mention, I've got a machine which is in it's final days, desperately needs upgrading and I am way too gun-shy about Vista. Now that I'm in more graphical type business, switching to a mac is very tempting. I've been a PC user all my life but have been increasingly bothered by all the problems (security, patches, hangs, crashes, etc.). How many of you use an iMac (including running Corel, Photograv and MS Office) in your home/office?
